  • So Long, Austin

The Funniest Person in Austin contest is over. The contest that I stayed in Austin to do (while saving as much as I could) has come and gone. Although I reached one of my goals (finals), I didn’t reach my ultimate goal (third place), and so I’m packing a lunch and heading to New York City with an adjusted perspective.

However, I didn’t move to Austin for a contest. No, I moved here to escape doom. It was a life or death or San Antonio situation. I was nervous (me?), moving in haste, I had absolutely no idea what I was in for and I also had zero self-awareness. Evacuating from a place like New Orleans to a new town with a girlfriend and no plan is a dizzying experience when you’re as ignorant as I was. Despite all that, what I gained from my 6+ year sojourn (google it) in Austin amounted to much more than any title or monetary prize. (In fact, it amounted to no money at all!)

It took me a while, but I grew to really love this town. Austin has warmth, it has comfort, it’s full of creative people and delicious food and of course has a thriving music scene. It’s the festival capital of the world. Austin literally just wants to have fun. Back in New Orleans, I was bad at having fun if the situation wasn’t exactly perfect. Now, the situation doesn’t really matter. Hey, I love fun now! How ‘bout that!

All of the amazing comedy I’ve encountered here was also an incredible surprise. Holy Hell, what a great scene this town has. It’s ever growing, shape-shifting, never predictable and wonderfully self-nurturing. Austin doesn’t wait around for shit; it creates new stuff constantly. See? fun! More importantly, this town whipped me into shape and as a result I’m a 100% better comedian now than I was almost seven years ago. I’m really gonna miss all the friends I made here, but I’m sure I’ll see yall soon.

If you like to see me perform these are my remaining shows:

    —————————————-

Friday, May 25th - Coldtowne Theater - Farewell Shows! 8 & 10pm - This is the last time I’ll be headlining in Austin, please come out and have a good time. Each show has a super-funny lineup and both shows are $5 and the theater is BYOB, which rules.

    —————————————-

Tuesday, May 29th - PUNCH! - Cap City Comedy Club - 8pm - If you’ve never been to PUNCH!, you’re seriously missing out on one of the best weekly showcases in town. The lineup is always high quality, and I feel honored to be on the first show of the new season. This’ll be my actual last set in town.

And as always, you can listen to my comedy radio show, Grow Up!, every Thursday at 6pm CST. Check out the remaining schedule here.
One more thing: If you wanna follow my exploits in the Big Apple, don’t hesitate to follow me on Twitter.

Hope to see you lovely people before I go, and thanks for the great time, Austin!
